Tour of the Alps will toast with Cembra Valley wines

A fine wine selection from the heart of Trentino will mark key moments of the 2023 Tour of the Alps (April 17-21) in the name of a deep and ancient connection with cycling

The Tour of the Alps is distinguished by its technical makeup of short routes, steep climbs and undulating profile, and its close connection to the regions of Tirol, Südtirol/Alto Adige, and Trentino, the Euregion’s three cornerstones.

The 2023 edition of the Tour of the Alps, scheduled for April 17-21, will offer the opportunity to discover another gem – this time found in a goblet: the wines of Val di Cembra, the valley where Trentino's winemaking history has its roots, will provide the official wine of the race organized by GS Alto Garda.

The area located in the heart of Trentino, between the Adige Valley and the Dolomites, is among the settings for the fourth stage of the 2023 #TotA on Thursday, April 20. The 152.9-kilometre stage starts in Rovereto and finishes in Predazzo. The racers will also travel the roads of Palù di Giovo, one of the seven Cembran municipalities and home of great cycling champions such as Francesco Moser and Gilberto Simoni.

Specifically, there are four "caneve" from Val di Cembra (Cantina Simoni, Corvée, Villa Corniole and Cantina Micheli) whose wines will be featured on the podium at each stage finish and during all official moments of the 2023 #TotA. Headlining the whites among the valley’s labels of excellence will be the distinctive Müller Thurgau, the Trentodoc mountain bubbles, Chardonnay, Riesling and aromaticGewürztraminer while the delicate Pinot Noir, intense Lagrein and fresh Schiava will seize the spotlight for the reds.

The grapes used to produce Val di Cembra’s noble cuvées grow on the typical centuries-old terraces reaching up to 870 m above sea level and distributed along more than 700 km of dry-stone walls. Because of these unique features, mountain viticulture is defined as "heroic," an adjective that matches the spirit of the Euroregional stage race and for which the Cembra Valley was awarded the title of "Historic Rural Landscape of Italy" by the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies.

It’s with pride that we are collaborating with such a prestigious sporting event as the Tour of the Alps, which has raised a glass to the excellence of our territory. Viticulture in the Cembra Valley plays the leading role, and over the centuries, it has defined the physiognomy of its landscape, making it unique. The partnership between Cembra Valley wines and the Tour of the Alps also strengthens a deep bond between the world of cycling and our land, which has given birth to great champions of two wheels,” said Vera Rossi, President of the Cembra Valley Tourist Board.
