#TotA Day 2: Another exciting day in the cards from Trentino to Südtirol/Alto Adige

The race’s second day gets off from Primiero/S. Martino di Castrozza with Frenchman Geoffrey Bouchard donning the Melinda Green Jersey. Stage 2 takes the riders to Lana, in Südtirol/Alto Adige in what should be another very interesting stage. Live on Eurosport 1, RaiSport, L’Equipe TV and TV2 Denmark from 2.00 PM

Good morning from the Tour of the Alps! After getting things started with the opening stage won by Frenchman Geoffrey Bouchard, the challenge on the Euregio Tirol-Südtirol/Alto Adige-Trentino continues with stage 2, 154,1 km from Primiero/S. Martino di Castrozza to Lana. The race immediately tackles the first uphill with the rise to Passo Rolle warming up the athletes before a long descent, leading to the intermediate sprint in Cavalese. Then the race will enter Südtirol/Alto Adige, with the demanding climb to the Mendelpass/Passo della Mendola, second categorized climb of the day, that could even be good terrain for attacks from some daring riders. In the finale, the Gampenpass/Passo Palade will precede another long descent to downtown Lana, introducing to a final loop with the final 3 km slightly rising.

After yesterday’s success, Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R-Citroen) will try to defend his jersey from his closest rivals: Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) and Romain Bardet (Team DSM) in first place. We will see whether other top riders such as Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Qazaqstan), Pavel Sivakov and Richie Porte (INEOS-Grenadiers), Esteban Chaves and Hugh Carthy (EF-Education Easypost) and Frenchman Thibaut Pinot will try to do something on the Mendelpass/Passo della Mendola, or will wait one more day before showing their cards.

THE STARTING CITY: PRIMIERO/SAN MARTINO DI CASTROZZA. In summer, the outdoor activities of the Primiero-San Martino di Castrozza area range from easy hikes to trekking routes of several days, from cycling trails to the adrenaline of the San Martino Bike Arena and the Primiero Pump Track. In winter, the San Martino di Castrozza Passo Rolle Skiarea offers plenty of adventures thanks to 60 Km of slopes.

ON THE ROADLake Kaltern lies south of the homonymous village, wonderfully surrounded by beautiful apple orchards and vineyards. With a surface of about 103 hectares and 44 hectares of surrounding reed bed, Lake Kaltern is the largest and warmest South Tyrolean lake. Additionally, due to an average depth of merely 6 metres, it ranks among the shallowest lakes in the Alps. Lake Kaltern is an important touristic pole of attraction, and a natural paradise of inestimable value.

THE STAGE TASTE: This stage revolves around enjoyment: first, there is the South Tyrolean Wine Road through the valley, which features famous vineyards around Kalterer See lake and the towns of Tramin/Termeno and Montan/Montagna. Here, Gewürztraminer and the multi-award-winning Pinot Noir grow alongside the autochthonous grape variety Vernatsch. The second highlight is eutschnonsberg/Alta Val di Non with its cultivated dandelions in spring and radicchio fields in autumn.

DON'T MISS: The wine museum in Kaltern/Caldaro showcases the millennia-old history of viticulture in South Tyrol, the vines of old wine varieties, and the presence of the “Saltner," the fearsome guardian of the vineyards.

THE FINISH: LANA. A linguistic curiosity, Lana is the only town in South Tyrol whose name doesn’t have a different translation into German and Italian. One of the largest municipalities in South Tyrol, Lana is a well-known holiday area with many offers and attractions. Visitors can hike through the apple orchards to the fruit tree museum, go shopping, or play golf. The second oldest cable car in the world connects Lana with the Vigiljoch Summer resort.

TRAFFIC CLOSURES

For the stage 2 the authorities of the Autonomous Province of Trento have issued an order to suspend traffic, in both directions, on all the roads involved in the race, 30 minutes in advance of the times indicated in the official timetables.

The section of the SS 50 from Passo Rolle to Primiero will be closed one hour earlier than the times indicated in the timetables, and parking will be prohibited for all vehicles on both sides of the road on the steep downhill stretches.

For this stage the authorities of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano have issued an order suspending traffic in both directions on all roads involved in the race at least 45 minutes before the start vehicle passes through and until the passage of the broomwagon.
