Not even a season stop could slow down the progression of the Tour of the Alps. The stage race organized by GS Alto Garda is already working for the 2021 edition, which will take place on the route already planned for 2020 and confirmed in full. In the meantime, on Sunday, August 23rd, on the occasion of the traditional Tirol, coinciding with the opening of the European Forum Alpbach 2020 – underway in Alpbach, Tirol – the Euroregional stage race made another significant step in terms of institutional recognition and territorial cooperation.
In Alpbach, the agreement establishing a new European Group of Territorial Collaboration (EGTC) was signed. The new EGCT will be the new institutional reference point for the Tour of the Alps and other cross-border collaboration initiatives between the three territories united in the Euregio Tirol – South Tyrol – Trentino.
During a prestigious panel participated by the governors of the three territorial partners – Gūnther Platter (Governor of Tirol and President of the Euregio), Arno Kompatscher (President of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano) and Maurizio Fugatti (President of the Autonomous Province of Trento) – the agreement was signed by Florian Phleps (Managing Director of Tirol Werbung), Erwin Hinteregger (CEO of IDM Südtirol-Alto Adige) and Mauro Casotto (Operations Director of Trentino Sviluppo).
The establishment of the new “Euregio Connect” EGTC shows the territories and the Euregio’s determination to extend the “Tour of the Alps formula” to new initiatives and events, even outside the world of sport. The remarkable results of the Euroregional collaboration with its pioneering project, the Tour of the Alps, were recalled by the words of Euregio’s President Platter during the Alpbach meeting.
Raising the awareness on the Euregio’s nature and role and expanding the fields of Euroregional collaboration were among the strategic goals of the Tour of the Alps, and are now fully realized.
During the Alpbach meeting, the “Euregio Lab” research project, chaired by Prof. Walter Obwexer, presented numerous innovative proposals to extend the areas of collaboration, while strengthening the Euroregional representations and democratic structures in the three territories.
The introduction of the new EGTC does not change the organizational formula of the Tour of the Alps, whose operational responsibility remains with the GS Alto Garda. “We are proud and happy of the establishment of the new EGTC and the presentation of the guidelines for the Euregio’s development – said the President of GS Alto Garda, Giacomo Santini. – The Tour of the Alps has paved the way for new and deeper forms of collaboration, helping the Euregio from being a political institution to becoming concretely perceived in citizens’ daily lives”.
“This successful path would not have been possible without the perfect collaboration established with Tirol Werbung, IDM Südtirol-Alto Adige and Trentino Marketing right from the start of the new project. An agreement that our organizational team will now be able to consolidate with the new EGTC “, concluded Santini.
