The Tour of the Alps breaks into the Euregio’s history

The multimedia platform of the Tirol-Südtirol/Alto Adige-Trentino Euro-Region telling the success story of the Tour of the Alps was inaugurated with an official ceremony in Innsbruck

Three months before the start of the 2023 Tour of the Alps, the Euro-Regional UCI Pro Series stage race experienced an important day between past, present and future in Innsbruck on Thursday, January 19th.

On the occasion of the announcement of the participating teams in the 2023 edition, starting from Alpbachtal (Tirol) and ending in Bruneck/Brunico (Südtirol/Alto Adige) after passing through Trentino, an interactive Euregio platform was inaugurated to present the Tour of the Alps, a benchmark project for the collaboration among the three territories.

Attending the ceremony were Mario Gerber (Land Tirol’s Tourism Councillor) and Karin Seiler (Euregio Connect GECT President and Tirol Werbung’s Managing Director) along with long-time GS Alto Garda President Giacomo Santini, whose tenure has extended from the early Giro del Trentino years all over to the Tour of the Alps era. Also in attendance were Austrian Cycling Federation President Harald J. Mayer, Alpbachtal Tourismus’ Managing Director Markus Kofler and Matthias Fink of the Euregio’s General Secretariat.

The interactive exhibition available at the Euregio Infopoint in downtown Innsbruck offers an exciting experience by navigating through images, statistics, and videos. It's a state-of-the-art tool leading the visitors into the modern vision of cycling offered by the Tour of the Alps, proving an extraordinary promotional medium for lands of incomparable beauty.

The exhibition's content will be constantly updated, displaying the most beautiful pages of this competition loved by all cycling professionals. This initiative further establishes and elevates the event’s stature ahead of its 46th edition (counting the 40 years of the Giro del Trentino as an integral part of this journey). The Tour of the Alps is now an integral piece of the Euregio’s history.

Mario Gerber, Land Tirol’s Tourism Councillor: “The Tour of the Alps starts again with a spectacular route through the Alps. The stages lead over the mountains and through the valleys of the Euregio - the perfect terrain for demanding road bike races. The race is not only a sporting highlight, but also a flagship project of the Euregio Tirol-Südtirol-Trentino. The Tour of the Alps is a brilliant example of how this cooperation can work.”

Karin Seiler, Euregio Connect EGTC President, Tirol Werbung Managing Director: “The Tour of the Alps is a starting point for our land in two ways. On the one hand, it takes place at the beginning of our summer season, offering charming images that attract people to come and explore Tirol by bike. On the other hand, this Tour is the first joint project of our Euregio Connect EGTC. Under the umbrella of this EGTC, the three tourism organizations, Trentino Marketing, IDM Südtirol and Tirol Werbung, have joined forces to promote tourism and sports together, and pave the way for further cross-border initiatives."

Giacomo Santini, GS Alto Garda President: “The Tour of the Alps is a prime example of the implementation of cross-border cooperation that was promoted by the European Union since many years ago. The goal of our Tour is to overcome old borders in order to transform border areas into places of cooperation between peoples with a common history, culture and language. Tirol and the other regions of Austria, South Tyrol and Trentino have the same geographical features, with very special mountains and valleys. Thanks to our Tour, the images of these beautiful panoramas will be brought into the homes of millions of people in Europe and around the World.”

Harald J. Mayer, Austrian Cycling Federation PresidentThe participation of the Austrian National Team at the Tour of the Alps is a wonderful possibility for our riders to present themselves in a top-level competition. They can show our national colors in front of our home crowd and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they will take their chances there.”

Markus Kofler, Tourismusverband Alpbachtal & Tiroler Seenland’s Managing Director: "Thanks to its varied landscapes and to its top location in the heart of Tirol, the Alpbachtal Valley is an absolute benchmark for plenty of cycling itineraries. The starting venue, Rattenberg is the smallest city in Austria, and the flower village of Reith im Alpbachtal, together with stage 1 finish are, Alpbach, the most beautiful village in Austria with a modern Congress Centrum, are the ideal setting for cycling races and Tirol’s traditional values. The Tour of the Alps is a top partner to consolidate pro cycling in a sustainable way in Alpbachtal and Tirol."
