Final showdown in South Tyrol: Bozen awaits the new champion

2019 Tour of the Alps ends on Friday April 26th with stage 5 (Caldaro/Kaltern-Bolzano/Bozen, 147,8 Km). Start at 11.45 am CET. Two categorised climbs (Collalbo/Klobenstein and San Genesio/Jenesien). Live TV from 2.00 PM CET

Good morning from 2019 Tour of the Alps. The first four stages of the euro-regional race splintered the overall standings but the race’s crown is still in play. Team Sky’s goal is to end its glorious history in pro cycling on a high: overall leader Pavel Sivakov and his teammate Tao Geoghegan Hart faced TotA’s final stage with the confidence of being in the best possible position, but Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) will not give up without trying, counting on a good condition.

Tour of the Alps’ stage 5 (Caldaro/Kaltern-Bolzano/Bozen,147,8 Km) features two categorised climbs, Collalbo/Klobenstein and San Genesio/Jenesien, that will crown the king of the 2019 edition.

START: CALDARO/KALTERNCaldaro/Kaltern, a pleasant small town in the Überetsch, is wonderfully located along the famous wine road. The wine village is well known especially for its lake, the warmest bathing lake in the Alps. At the same time, Kaltern lies at the foot of the Mendola mountain range, which offers another attraction – the Mendola cable car, one of Europe’s steepest funiculars.

ON THE ROADLake Kaltern lies south of the homonymous village, wonderfully surrounded by beautiful apple orchards and vineyards. With a surface of about 103 hectares and 44 hectares of surrounding reed bed, lake Kaltern is one of the largest and warmest South Tyrolean lakes. While due to an average depth of 6 metres it ranks among the shallowest lakes in the Alps. Lake Kaltern is an important touristic pole of attraction and most of all a natural paradise of inestimable value.

THE STAGE TASTE: With 70 wineries, 150 km of wine road and 4,300 hectares of vineyards, the landscape along the South Tyrolean Wine Road is marked by wine-growing. The three native varietals grow here: Lagrein, full of character, thrives around Bolzano/Bozen; the Überetsch area producers are famous for their Kalterersee, while the Unterland area is home to the aromatic Gewürztraminer.

DON’T MISS: With some 150 castles, palaces and stately residences, Appiano/Eppan on the South Tyrolean Wine Road is home to a large part of the magnificent history of South Tyrolean architecture. The “castle triangle” above Missiano/Missian links three of the best-known structures: Korb Castle, Hocheppan Castle and the ruins of Boymont Castle.

THE FINISH: BOLZANO/BOZEN. The Capital of Südtirol, Bolzano/Bozen hosts the final showdown of the 2019 Tour of the Alps. This area is regarded as the one with the highest density of castles in Europe. The city offers numerous trails for those who wish to take a walk without getting to far away from the centre. At the same time, more expert excursionists can take advantage of one of the three available cablecars to reach the plateaus that surround Südtirol’s capital. Bolzano/Bozen has been third classified in the latest Italian cities ranking for the quality of life.

COOPERATION TRAVELS BY BIKE: THE EUREGIO CYCLING COMMUNITY

The trip of the Team Euregio Cycling Community will end in Bolzano/Bozen with the final stage between Caldaro/Kaltern and the capital of South Tyrol

Euregio Cycling Community is a new reality made by non-professional riders from the three lands, respresening the key values of the Euroregional cooperation in the most important granfondo events. The first adventure of the new project is connected to the Tour of the Alps: three riders for each territory faced the five stages of the race some days before the event, showing an all-different perspective on it through a content series on the Tour of the Alps official channels.
